Can I learn to sing better

how to sing, sing better, singing tips, learn to sing, You can learn to sing better with the right training

You might be making a drastic mistake! Do you think you have a bad singing voice? Do you think that your genes decide whether you can be a singer? Has this myth played a part in your decisions about music making? Then read on before you plan out your next vocal project.

When I started songwriting I was well aware of my singing skills. My voice wasn’t anything I wanted to inflict on anyone and I wasn't sure if I could learn to sing. So when I got to the point where I wanted to record and produce my songs I had always assumed I’d get an established singer to voice my songs.

This is nothing out of the ordinary but as an indie music maker, this can add another layer of cost, time and planning to your project. When you are starting out time can be a resource in short supply especially when you are wearing the many hats of an indie music maker e.g. songwriter, marketeer, musician and producer.

Being able to voice my own tracks would allow me to create guide vocals for the actual vocalist I selected or even voice the track myself. I could fit this in around my own time constraints. In my guide how to be a music maker success story I stated that getting your music out there is key to getting visibility. So if being able to voice my own tracks helped me achieve this, then, it would be worth it.

But what was the best way to learn to sing? I didn't have time to go to singing lessons so it had to be an online vocal training program. After doing some research on the programs, I decided that improving my singing was something I really could achieve. However, I found scores of websites offering online singing lessons with ‘facts’ about singing but plenty of other websites steadfastly debunking those facts.

So what can you draw from this?  Firstly, from my experience, if I can improve my voice then you can too (Listen to Warrior my last lead vocal recording). Secondly, with so many courses out there you have to find a vocal training program that trains you how to sing better in a way that works for you (the singing method and singing techniques). See if they offer a free lesson or mini-course before you have to purchase. Practice and persistence are the keys that improve your singing voice.

The truth is, YOU CAN LEARN TO BE A BETTER SINGER. Below are 4 myths that you need to ignore to move forward and get that great singing voice that is hiding inside you.

SINGING MYTHS

You are born knowing how to sing

This is simply not true and of course, it is often used as a reason to not even attempt to become a better singer. The truth is there are very few people who can just sing well without any singing lessons or training.

We all know that there are gifted individuals in sport. But have you ever heard of any that got to where they are without training or practice? Of course not, but your vocal chords are muscles, which mean they can be trained as well. You have to practice and have a great vocal coach and vocal training program but if you stick at it you will make those muscles fitter.

To learn how to sing is difficult and takes a lifetime

Assuming you have no impediment that is like saying the act of talking is difficult. Of course it isn’t. However, learning a foreign language and trying to get the accent right is another matter. It takes study and practice and should be enjoyable at the same time.

The same thing can be said about singing. It is a natural ability, how good you become depends on the effort you put in and the training you receive. Seeing the journey to improvement as something to enjoy rather than something to overcome will make the journey easier.

You can’t increase your vocal range

As in the previous point, assuming you are born with fully functioning vocal chords, they will have a capability to be trained, although, you may not be using them to their full capacity at present. A good vocal training program can help you to train your vocal chords to produce notes you currently may not be able to reach. After all, high notes are called ‘high’ only because they vibrate at a higher frequency. Many singers start out at a particular register, say, baritone and then move on to a higher register like tenor. This means that they trained themselves to sing higher.

If we couldn’t increase our vocal range this is like saying most people have cars where the accelerator is limited to a certain speed and can never go above it. But we know all we have to do is push harder. In the case of singing, this means doing the RIGHT exercises to push your vocal chords harder and so expand our vocal range.

You can’t become a good singer without perfect pitch

Well, there are a couple things to note here. Firstly, people that naturally have perfect pitch, also known as ‘absolute pitch’, are not common. Perfect pitch is the ability to instantly identify a musical note without any external reference (great if you have it).

Secondly, singers who get the right advice and training and put in enough practice end up developing an excellent ‘relative’ pitch (or ear). That means the muscles used when singing develop muscle memory that enables them to automatically find the right pitch.

Learning to sing better is learning to improve a natural ability. This is something you can do given the correct guidance. All it needs from you is the right mindset and the courage to be that singer you want to be.

Ignore all the myths. Vocal training works when you use the right training program just like any other physical activity which means it is down to how much you personally want that dream voice.

THE RIGHT HABITS CREATE SINGING SUCCESS

singing success, how to sing, sing better, learn to sing, singing tips, Your habits will define your success

I have mentioned in earlier guides that the 3Ps passion, preparation, persistence are vital for success. This is because, as an indie music maker you are in overall control you are your own ‘yes’ man. So one of the things we have to guard against is procrastination.

“Skill deficits are one of the most basic reasons for procrastination. If you lack the skills to complete certain tasks, it is only natural to avoid doing them.”

This is why I stated in my guide how to be a music maker success story creating a plan that you commit to is so important. It is so easy to find obstacles and reasons not to carry out a task and this is where passion will drive you on.

Often failure will be put down to a vocal training program not working. This could well be the case in many cases. When researching for a vocal training program try and find the best course out there. Try and find out what aspects of their training program appeals to you.

  • Is the type of singing they specialise in right for you
  • Has the vocal coach had success themselves
  • Does it provide more than just audio assistance

When you have found the 'right' one stick to it until you make some progress then evaluate whether it is worth continuing. If you are following the program correctly but not making any progress then it really is pointless continuing. Try another course.

Persistence will only be beneficial if you reach a critical mass of motivational energy. What I mean by this is that you need to see enough success to keep driving your motivation onwards.

To succeed in getting the voice that you want is about effectively applying a set of particular habits driven by aligned characteristics.

Characteristic

Habit

Organization

deciding your practise interval, for example, 4 days a week for at least 45 minutes

Focus

Why am I doing this? Because I want to finally get that voice I deserve

Consistency

Sticking to training plans

Determination

Working through difficulties, for example, practising even without access to your normal practice space

Your habits will eventually lead to your failure or success.

Performance Improvement

One of the key aspects of improving your singing is performance improvement. What I mean is you can have great vocal range, tone and pitch but if you can’t execute properly because you are a bag of nerves your singing is going to suffer. I found this out when I started to try and record. Any nervousness is ruthlessly amplified on a digital recording. So another key factor to look for in training programs is help with performance improvement and relaxation.

I found this was so important as it becomes frustrating when you know you can perform the vocal exercises and are making progress but you cannot deliver when it matters. In the end, you want to enjoy learning to sing not for it to become a chore.

Can you learn to sing? The short answer is yes! I don't regard myself as a sensational singer by any measure but I know the journey I have travelled and therefore I know that learning how to sing is within reach of anyone with the 3Ps (passion, preparation, persistence).

Whether you should try and sing better depends on where you are in your music making career and what elements of music making you want to be involved in. Having said that, I have found singing is a great skill to have even when I didn't plan to be the lead vocalist on my songs. It enabled me to convey my creative direction, produce demos and improve collaboration which enhances the overall creative process.

The take away is that learning to sing better should not be discounted as an ambition. You can learn to sing, I know this is true. How good you get just depends on your singing goals.

This guide does not intend to provide techniques to improve your singing. There are many vocal training programs out there and I found that having that technical advice and structured learning really helped. But from my experience, I know that certain characteristics and behaviour need to be in place for you to succeed as I have stated. If you are interested in a good vocal training program click here to be taken to my product review page.

Whatever you choose to do passion, preparation and persistence will ensure that you succeed.

Good luck.
