Spotify For Artists

Spotify is one way for listeners to support their favourite artists and music makers. However, as an artist and music maker, Spotify is a platform that cannot be ignored. Therefore, making the most of available promotion tools is crucial.

Spotify for Artists has been created to allow artists to manage a profile and get stats on listeners, streams and followers. To get going

1. Go to artists.spotify.com and get access and create an account as an artist.

2. Claim your artist profile if you already have music on Spotify

3. Once you have claimed your profile you'll be able to complete your profile by uploading photos and completing a bio.

There is also an artist pick function where you can select a track or playlist that will appear at the head of your profile to get more engagement from visitors. However, a playlist needs to be created on a personal Spotify account first in order to be available for selection.

TIP: Once your latest single or album is released and live, select it as an Artist’s Pick to pin it to your artist profile. This gives it more prominence for listeners visiting your profile. It can also be shown with an accompanying image.

With Spotify For Artists, you'll also have access to your songs, listening and streaming data analytics. You'll also be able to submit a song to be considered by Spotify's editorial team for inclusion in Spotify curated playlists. At the moment you need to carry this out on the desktop version of Spotify for Artists.

The release date must be more than 7 days away. Although, I would give them at least two weeks considering the volume of releases they are dealing with to give your song the best chance of consideration.

TIP: Create your own playlists and add a few of your songs to them. This is a great way to get more streams for your songs.

4. Download the Spotify for Artists app to keep up to date on the go.

Spotify Playlist Submission

There is a lot of talk about the need to get on Spotify playlists and there are many services that offer to get your songs on playlists. What I will say from my own experience is that you have to be very wary with your hard-earned cash.

Firstly, there are some smaller operators who are looking for a quick buck so check out their playlist first. How many songs are there? (thousands? definitely a no-no). How long will your song remain on the playlist? Where will you be placed on the playlist?

Secondly, as we all know with these music streaming platforms, including Spotify, we are continually up against the algorithm. THE ALGORITHM DOES NOT LIKE NEGATIVE INDICATORS OF YOUR MUSIC.  What I mean is, that even if you find a good playlisting service, you will find that after the service you have paid for has been completed, you will mostly find a steep drop off in your streams. Also, some of the playlists your song has been added to may not be the right ones for your music.  What does this tell the algorithm?

1) it sees a sudden drop in streams and wonders why (negative indicator)

2) if the listeners of your music have not engaged with your songs (likes, adding to library etc.) because it was added to an inappropriate playlist, the algorithm is going see that there were lots of listeners but little engagement (negative indicator).

Both of these factors will get your song ranked LOWER by the algorithm.

The ideal solution is to find playlists that SUIT YOUR MUSIC and then submit your music to them. When you do this you are likely to get more likes and saves to listeners libraries. This will FEED THE ALGORITHM WITH POSITIVE INDICATORS. This is what gets your music ranked higher.
